Kerry, thanks for the excellent fuel pump dta it is impressive and will be very
useful

Wow. Excellent info yet again. I didn't realize the hot vs cold engine start
thing. I should have been able to guess it though. I will have to check out
the starter and grounds. The electric fuel pumps I got are inline backups for
the mechanical pumps. I put in a series of ball valves to either put them in
line or to bypass them completely. I can also use them to transfer fuel
between tanks or polish the fuel. Total investment was about $300 and 8-10
hours of time. Probably could have been faster if I was a better "plumber".
Here is a pretty darn good writeup that I followed to do mine.

I found it on a Hatteras forum originally. As some of you already know...I ran
her completely out of fuel last season and getting fuel to the mechanic pumps
and bleeding the injector rail was no fun. I love the new electric pumps.
They are great insurance.

Hi Kerry
Starter turns over cold engine easily. Engine hot barely if at all until you
up the volts.

With a cold engine there is little or no compression in the cylinders - easy
for the starter to it turn over.
With a hot engine - just stopped, there is compression in some cylinders and
the starter is not strong enough to overcome this. The weakness is usually
because of reduced voltage at the starter. A test is if the + ve or -ve
terminal of the starter or cables become hot on starting. ( it can also be
caused by a bad negative cable ) Next is the starter motor, its brushes etc
-- I have the same situation on one engine and have researched it a bit...hope
this helps. p.s. until I can get round to it I just jump the house batteries!

What are the electric fuel pumps you have installed -- am interested..are they
in-line back ups ?

Roger has given you a very professional run through!

Cheers Ross.

Good information thanks. Let me walk through the list:

Fuel filters were checked. Brand new a month ago and checked again once I was
in the slip. Look good.
Fuel pumps are both mechanical and I just installed electric pumps over the
winter. Fuel pressure gauges look good.
Governor adjustment...definitely could be...haven't checked that one yet.
Thanks for the thought.
Sticky Rack...not sure, how do I diagnose?
Water Contamination, could be but I don't think so. All three tanks were
treated this spring and all three tanks have fresh fuel in them. I checked the
fuel filters and didnt see any water.
Improper stop setup, could be....not sure how to check
Return Line Plugged, would this only happen at low RPM's dropping into reverse
or would this happen in other circumstances as well?
Couple of other thoughts.....

Hitting the shutdown button, I have to hold it a LONG time. Seems there is not
enough juice to activate the relay complete that cuts off the fuel supply.
The starter BARELY turns over if at all. In order to that that engine to fire
back up I have to put the starter battery and house bank in line. Just tried
that for the first time when the engine died this week and it worked. Odd part
is that this problem is ONLY with the port engine and both engines share the
same starter battery.
It FEELS like I have a power issue, but testing the starter battery, etc, I am
getting plenty of CCA off the battery and plenty charge from the alternators.
I just cant put my finger on it but it is the only thing that is keeping me
from saying my boat is running like a top.

Kerry: the engine stalling could be plugged fuel filters, low fuel pump
pressure, improper governor adjustment, sticky rack on one injector, possible
water contamination, improper stop setup with the rack being pulled out of the
run mode, plugged return line at the cylinder head. It will require a tech to
look at the problems. Fuel pressure should be checked at idle and full rpm for
a reading or 15 to 20 psi at idle and 70 psi at maximum rpm to eliminate the
fuel pump as the relief valve could be acting up in the fuel pump. The sticking
rack can be located individually with the valve cover removed and the racks, if
they are the new spring loaded types, can be pushed in manually and can be
checked for binding in the injector body. Check the fuel return as it indicates
a problem in the suction side if the return rate is below DDA specs which is .9
of a gallon in one minute at 1200 rpm. You can also check for air in the return
fuel with the return line in a clear container and see if air is getting in the
system. Check to make sure the stop lever is not pulling the governor stop
lever out of full fuel which can cause a problem at idle. Just some ideas from
a Detroit Diesel tech. Hope it helps
