George, I'm not aware of any other formula for hull speed than the one that is used. In trying to look deeper into your question, I looked at a few places and the most logic one I kept coming to was the formula 'we' use for hull speed. I don't know that it matters whether it's 'planing' or displacement.' It is based on your LOA.
