Besides, at some point we're going to have to split the sources into a
"kmod" kernel module package and a "unionfs-utils" userland package.

As an unionfs user: I would prefer a way WITHOUT unionfs-utils. Then you can manage union even without the need to compile any other software, this is very useful.

Remount is ideal for me, accessing through /proc or /sys or whatever
is acceptable but it's pretty tricky for end-user, remount is cleaner and I like it more.
