I think that a lot of people have been unfairly dumping on Eli Masar. Eli has been instrumental in combating chronic illegal activity on/near baltimore avenue, and is a really nice, approachable & down-to-earth guy. Its funny how the City Paper has the nerve to defame him without consulting the neighbors forced to deal with the constant flow of problems spewing from Baltimore Ave. He has helped our local community group with several serious issues which we could never have resolved otherwise. One surprising (or unsurprising) thing to note about L&I is that local politicians have influence in L&I decisions. We had a major crime/safety problem in our neighborhood which was orginally cited and shutdown by the police and L&I. This problem was also affecting a long-established, licensed business directly next door. When i called the enforcement dept # on the notice the day of the notice expiration (which had been torn down that day) i was informed that the case had been closed and that the perpetrators of the situation were mysteriously given the green light to operate by local politicians, without consulting neighbors. This OK was given on the precise day the L&I notice expired. So if you have deep pockets/influence and L&I problems, i'd recommend seeking out your local district rep, whomever that might be. Our reps have the ultimately say on what goes on in their neighborhoods, not Eli. Furthermore, the fact that UCD and Eli have to step in to deal with these issues demonstrates a serious deficiency in our local elected leadership (whom have all be contacted about issues only Eli can resolve). --Michael. -- .
