The problem was an illegal nightclub directly next to a licensed bar.
They charged money, served alcohol, regularly advertised as a night club,
had no emergency exits and brought people on the street from 2am onward.
Before this speakeasy, the same location housed a regular late-night party
spot which hosted massive raves and affairs during the weekends.
Holy crap, Batman! Speakeasies on Baltimore Avenue! I haven't heard that word since about 1929. Don't have my OED handy -- anybody know the derivation? On the other hand I do regularly brew gin in my clawfoot bathtub, even though she objects, at least until the stuff gets distilled, then nothing bothers Tubbie in the world.
And massive raves and affairs!! I live just up the street and never got invited. In future, please post all invitations to massive raves and affairs on the culture list.
As to L&I closures, the Whole Truth and Nothing But the Truth Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc. and Old Order Mennonite Amish Dan's Barbecue got busted in rapid succession. I feel *so* much safer now that "those people" aren't still out on the street selling fleas. Word is that folks selling bottled water in Cedar Park also got hit. Now you can buy it for twice the price in the store.
Now if the Language Police could just do something about all those illegal immigrants speaking Nigerian, Bili, Sudanese, Cameroonian, Chads and Fronch out on Baltimore Ave. at all hours of the day and night I'd feel twice as safe. Also playing loud reggae music on the sidewalk, dagnabit. What's a University City Yuppie to do?
