Thank you, Charles Buchholtz, for this really logical and persuasive
response. I think that these are very exciting times: it suddenly seems possible
that gay marriage may actually become a reality within my lifetime! Though we
bicker on the listserv, in University City we are actually quite spoiled by
living in such an inclusive place. We sometimes forget that so many other places
- in the world, in the country, in the state, in the city - are not so
accepting. Some writers have sort of made light of the issue of gay
marriage/religious dogma on this list today, perhaps forgetting that everyone doesn't
enjoy
the same freedom to live how they want to live, that we do here.

Until it is scientifically proven that homosexuality is not 'a
choice,' then the issue of gay marriage is not a civil rights
   issue.

Religion is a choice in this country (freedom of religion" and all
that.) But discrimination based on religious choice is considered a
civil rights issue.

Racial appearance (dark or light skin, etc) is not a choice, but
discrimination based on racial appearance is considered a civil rights
issue.

It seems to me that discrimination against homosexuals is a civil
rights issue, whether or not homosexuality is a "choice". Choice
doesn't seem to have much to do with it. >>
