Recently I found an extra toolbar appearing on my
internet explorer. It turned out to have been installed by a GAIN
publishing piece of invasive software. I found this to be creepy and was
really angered by it. I installed some free adware which eventually
removed it.
Has anyone else on this list experienced this
problem? The free software, which was recommended by a tech support
person, is Ad-Aware SE personal.

Hi Joe
Yeah, Gain ... Gator, there's alot of that bad stuff. That toolbar
was probably d/l without your even knowing it - it's called a drive-by. No
warning, no prompt, nothing to let you know that something is being d/l onto
your computer.
I have ad-aware, but I also have Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html -
excellent IMHO, it detects and removes - not just quarantine and has an
immunizer feature. They also have a great help forum, I also have
spywareblaster, which isn't a detector/remover, it acts more as a first line of
defense by placing bad sites in your internet security and privacy. Also
get CWShredder - looks for just CoolWebSearch which is a nightmare and has many
variations.
Oh when you did your scan and quarantine with ad-aware, did you turn your
system restore (if it has that) off? That's important to do - otherwise
it'll still be sitting in your computer.
Good luck! I had a toolbar problem myself, took days to actually
completely get rid of the darned thing.
