Another program you should consider running is Zone Alarm. It's a free "firewall" which acts as a barrier between your computer and the internet. You then select which programs you wish to allow access to the internet (like Internet Explorer). More importantly it also blocks people from accessing your computer from the internet. If you're running an older operating system (like Windows 98 or Windows ME) or don't keep up to date with the Microsoft security updates, your computer is probably at risk for people breaking into it from the internet. Zone Alarm or any firewall (standard cable/DSL "routers" do the same thing), are a great line of defense.

Note that this is less of a problem for people with Macintosh computers, especially with Mac OS X.

Good luck,

Recently I found an extra toolbar appearing on my internet explorer. It turned out to have been installed by a GAIN publishing piece of invasive software. I found this to be creepy and was really angered by it. I installed some free adware which eventually removed it.
Has anyone else on this list experienced this problem? The free software, which was recommended by a tech support person, is Ad-Aware SE personal. Joe Clarke
