If you have an issue regarding an email which originated from an AOL account, the first and best thing to do is to report the problem to AOL. This does not require you to be an AOL user. AOL is far from perfect in many ways, but their staff does make a serious effort to deal with email abuse of all kinds, whether it's caused by AOL users or by outside sources. (Given that they process more email than any other ISP in the world -- or so they claim -- it's not surprising at all that they have a staff dedicated to such matters.)

The postmaster.aol.com website has a substantial amount of information on their various email-related policies and procedures. Of specific interest in this situation is their page on junk email, located at http://postmaster.aol.com/guidelines/junk.html

In a message dated 6/6/07 11:54:29 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

I apologize, Glenn. I did misunderstand the meaning of that header, and I agree that I was wrong. Frankly, the writing style of committeeman7 reminds me of a different contributor to this list, so I was surprised at what I (thought that I) found in the headers.

Glenn—there’s no conspiracy here, and no gangs—just neighbors trying to make life better for all of us. Name calling, personal attacks, and anonymous letters impede communication, rather than facilitating it. I’m happy to see that you’ve done less of the name calling when called out on it, and I’m sorry that you felt that I was personally attacking you this time. I have no personal animosity towards you.

Glenn, I was also the victim of one of these anonymous posts which seems to have a related writer. Back on April 2nd, the following email appeared on the PFSNI listserv. I thought it was on the purple list also, but I can't find that in my old emails. That writer was called [EMAIL PROTECTED] It's especially interesting to me that both are AOL users, and both make this vague reference to politics in their names. A coincidence? A copy cat now with [EMAIL PROTECTED] Does anybody know how to figure this out?

First I'll copy the email exactly as it showed up - the stuff at the start was there in the body of the email. After that, I'll send the details from the internet:

Dear Committee Person,

I am writing you today because I have a few questions. Regarding the property at 4800 Baltimore Ave: State Representative Jim Roebuck has been in that building for years. Melanie Lamond has put him out with the reason being that they could put more apartments in. When a zoning notice goes up, they are supposed to notify the neighbors as to what is going on.

Please answer the following questions:

Why was there no community meeting regarding this issue?

Why was there no petition?

Why doesn't Melanie think that she has to follow the same procedures as everyone else?

If it were anyone else, Melanie would be right their throat about it and if Cedar Park Associates knew about this, why did they not notify the community?

If Cedar Park did know about it, I guess that means that Cedar Park swept it under the rug because she must be close friends with someone in that Association.

Thank you,

J.J.

The claims in the email about me were totally off base and apparently designed to slow down my zoning change, which they did. Can any computer-savvy person on our listserv get to the bottom of this? If there is someone who can find the guilty party(ies), we can stop them. If not, they can continue to post misleading, untrue statements.

Thanks,

Melani Lamond
