Can anyone help in getting a Slimserver to run on a Linux bos, I am having servere performance problems?
Here's the background: I am planning to build a system of several Squeezboxes and a central Slimserver, so that I can play my large music collection anywhere around my house, anytime I want. I have started from setting up a Slimserver system. I first installed Slimserver into my Windows-XP computer. Installation was really easy and I was pretty happy with the way it operates there. Unfortunately, the Windows machine is fairly new high-performance box (P4 2.4GHz) and does require loud fans, and consumes a lot of power. I don't want to keep this machine running 24/7, and besides Win-XP isn't even stable enough for that purpose. So I desided I will make an old fanless PC (P2 300MHz) to run the Slimserver, because I can make it dead silent and it consumes less than 100 W. Of couse it will have to run Linux for rock-solid stablity. I bought for it a new 200 Gig Samsung Spinpoint hard disk to hold my music colletion in mp3's. These Samsung HD's are dead silent. Then I installed Ubuntu 5.20 onto the old PC and then Slimserver as the only application, and downloaded my mp3 music colletion to hard disk, currently about 80 Gigs (1576 albums, 16511 songs, 1891 artists, all mp3s, slimserversql.db file size 21050 KiB). Now the problem is that Slimserver will not behave nicely on this Linux machine. The very same Slimserver version 6.2.0 that runs so nicely on the Win-XP box, behaves really weirdly with the very same music collection on the Linux box. On the Linux box the Slimserver is pretty much useless. I realize that the old PC an order of magitude slower than the new one, but still I didn't quite expect this. Here are some odd things that the Slimserver does: - When I start the web interface, it will not show the playlist of the music player on the right hand side, most of the time. - When the same player is used with a Slimserver running on Windows, everything works OK. - Music browsing doesn't seem to work at all on the web interface. If I do somethihg like "Browse Albums" then click on some album, I will not get to see the songs on that album, instead the browser freezes for a while then shows the "Home" page. - Browsing music even on the Sqeezebox is really slow and freezes often. - Everythin with the server works *REALLY* *SLOW*, if at all. - Even music streaming occationally freezes The slimserver.pl process uses a stable 54.4 MiB on the Linux box out of 250 MiB of RAM. Total RAM usage is 121 MiB, so swapping doesn't really occur. CPU load is 10% on idle, but does jump to 100% easily. Load average shown by uptime is around 1.2. Can anyone give an idea what goes wrong with the Linux installation? How can I make it run better? Is there any way to debug what is going wrong? Both on Win-XP (Pro-SP2) and Linux (Ubuntu 5.20) I use the same Slimserver version: - SlimServer Version: 6.2.0 - 4753 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 - SlimServer Version: 6.2.0 - 4753 - Debian - EN - iso-8859-1 -- Ian Leiman ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ian Leiman's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2264 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18125 _______________________________________________ unix mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix
