I have posted this question at the Yahoo Linkstation Group as well, so sorry for the double post.
I have an HD-HG250 on which I would like to install SlimServer. I like the idea of keeping my music server self-contained on one low-wattage box without having to keep my PC running all the time. I have read Marc Fields' excellent instructions at fieldnetworks.com. I have also poked around the Linkstationwiki.org site and seen the Openlink package. I have also read the recent (November, 2005) thread in this forum about people having problems with error messages after trying to use the Openlink installation. I am pretty much a Linux newbie. I used a little UNIX about 15 years ago, though, and I think I can follow Marc Fields' instructions. My impression is that following these instructions is pretty reliable, and that people have really only needed to install extra development tools (like 'make') when they try to use Openlink. It also seems to me that Openlink is intended to be a shortcut to achieving root access in addition to adding some other "useful" tools that don't seem necessary for what I want to achieve. The downside to installing Openlink seems to be that there are cases where the installation process ruined some HG300 boxes. This leads me to question whether it is wiser to perform a complete OS replacement (the Openlink installation) or a surgical modification (the fieldnetworks.com process). I am confused, mostly because there seem to be multiple ways to get this to work and there are variations based on the flavor of Linkstation and other capabilities the user wishes to have on the Linkstation. All I want to do is run SlimServer, so I don't really want to install Openlink unless there is no other way. My Linkstation has firmware version 1.42 and there does not seem to be a later version available for the HD-HG series (is this wrong?), so I'm trying to avoid the "reflash" process as well. I have also heard about problems with PERL 5.8.7, so I am planning to use 5.8.5. So here is my basic question: With the HD-HG250 Linkstation, will I be able to simply follow the fieldnetworks.com instructions, and have a successful installation, or are there other things that I will need to install as well?
