I got a LinkStation because it claimed to be unix compatible. I run a
small network of Linux machines so this seemed to be ideal. I could
SMB mount things but as a backup system it was pretty useless as
inodes, UIDs, GIDs, soft links, hard links etc etc were not
recognised.

Then I was pointed at various resources that show that the LS runs
Linux under the hood. Except I can't telnet or anything into the box.
The firmware is version 2.0 so it is a MIPS box.

A quick nmap shows only port 21 (FTP) open (well, you can add 80, 139,
515, 548 amd 35586 but they are pretty useless AFAIK although it did
confirm that it was running a Linux 2.4.X kernel).

I can only FTP in as a regular user - it doesn't accept a root password
whatever I set it to - and that only allows me to get to the share
directory - so I can't copy up a new /etc/services file or anything and
reboot.

Before I throw it back at the shop, how do I change the firmware or
whatever so I can use the box in the manner it is claimed to be able to
work? It does look a nice unit and the idea of a network backup of
250GB is appealing...

TIA

John
