Why?

Hardware raid is worth the expense in high-utilisation situations.

Otherwise, software RAID is absoutely fine and free.

Again, why?

I manage several servers and most if not all of them have mirrored boot
drives. Using a pair of identical drives, I create a small (~100MB)
RAID1 mirror for /boot and allocate the rest of the drives to another
mirror which I manage using lvm.
