Supermicro do an 8-port SATA controller for around $120 (converted from
around £60).

Software RAID is more than adequate for the purposes of serving up music
for slimserver.

Agree with that.

I've been looking tonight, and it seems that Pentium D 930 is the
current sweet spot for price/performance.

Now, if I could only work out what the best motherboard is to go with
that...
