I can't answer your direct question, I've never tried one, but why would 
you want to use a USB hard drive? Why not use a normal IDE or SATA 
drive? or is this going to be on a notebook that is out of disk space?

I ask mostly out of curiosity and a perhaps mistaken understanding that 
USB is not the fastest interface in the world. Nor is it the most 
reliable way to connect a disk, which are usually connected by IDE, SCSI 
or SATA.
