Are you going to store your collection inside the VM (on virtual disks) or  
will you mount an external drive/share to the VM?

I'm currently tending towards CentOS for lean, but still _universal_ Linux  
distros. It's not bleeding edge, but stable.

FreeNAS/SlimNAS might soon be an option (I'm currently working on mplayer  
to allow running AlienBBC on it). But currently it probably is too memory  
hungry as it can't swap yet. This should be possible with the latest  
developpers release, but is not stable, yet.

It is upgradable, but IMHO not a server distro. And I know about  
AlienBBC... I hoped to have it fixed earlier, but am still experiencing  
problems with mplayer :-(.

This would be even harder to install/upgrade than SlimCD: you'd have to  
add perl yourself as well as MySQL, mplayer etc.
