I have been through the process of moving from debian to kubuntu dapper and then edgy from a slooooooooow box to a rocket intel core 2 duo. My system is really enjoyable. why do you want to go backwards. debian based distros seem to be here to stay. The help you get if things go wrong is fantastic (bda with alien bbc). Slim cd doesn't seem to work with my system because i've gone to a SATA disk. Kubuntu just seems to get better and better. If I am having problems I keep working at it until the problem gets sorted. Most problems are due to operator error and I have been guilty of most of them. i would strongly suggest you stick to ubuntu and get to know the distro rather than hoping for "simplicity" with another distro. I can assure you that for me Kubuntu edgy, alien BBC and wma works really well with reasonably up to date hardware.
