That's what we are here for. But first, while you are a Linux novice, 
how technical is your use of Windows?

And do you use the CMD shell on Windows? While all good Linux have 
graphical admin controls, some things just take a some shell commands, 
especially if there are issues.

I haven't, but I've done in on many versions of Mandrake/Mandriva.
The basics are nearly always the same.

Fedora Core 3 is pretty old. The current version is Core 6.
While the basic instructions are most likely the same, some thing always 
change with new versions.

I used to recommend Mandriva for a good first distro, but these days, 
Ubuntu is getting all the raves.

You can install the slimserver on anything.

The most important criteria, IMHO, is use a distro that one of your beer 
drinking buddies uses, so you can buy them a beer and get free consulting.
