That is interesting! What are you running on your DSM? DSL, SlimCD, or Debian? Which DSM machine are you running?
You are accessing the Buffalo TeraStation from DSL using Samba? It sounds like you have a great music server solution running. I will go to the DSL forum - I guess I have been sort of avoiding that.
