Mark >>> I've been a Windows 'power user' (rather than IT specialist)
since DOS; but, getting fed up with Microsoft's increasing despotism,
I've returned to experimenting with Linux and, like you, have been
delighted with Ubuntu.

However, my own researches so far suggest that there really aren't
any Linux apps yet that are quite as good as the specialist ones you
mention, though GRIP and EasyTag are very good. (I recently came
across a mention that there's a project working on an EAC-style app for
Linux.)

So I'm resigned to keeping some sort of Windows OS available -
currently on a separate box, though I'm planning to move to dual boot.
I'm not sure about speed issues running VM on older hardware; but since
you're upgrading that might not be a consideration in your case.

Like you, I've no intention of switching to Vista and renting back
my computer from Bill as long as he gives me his permission to use it.
But I'm not sure how I'll manage when MS stops supporting XP (I
understand from the site you referenced in your post that MS is
withdrawing XP from OEMs from early 2008, and may even stop activating
copies of XP sooner. Is that true???)

Best wishes for your migration!
