The issue of a machine that does everything isn't really an issue. The
only difference between a hard disk based consumer unit and a computer
is that the first is usually slower, inflexible and very soon
redundant. In other words the consumer unit is a slow computer with no
access to the software.

A computer lets you back things up etc.
