I wasn't thinking of a harddisk based SS-in-a-box - I'm thinking
something like flash-based (or USB-pen) SlimCD - all you need in the
box is RAM and a processor - the software would be on the USB/flash,
configurable and updateable via web-browser or similar, and the music
data would be on an external drive.
If for some reason the software crashes - just re-flash it! 
Of course, I'm sure this is much more difficult to implement than I
imagine!
