Unfortunately this seems to be the case.  I can only rip when I boot
the 2.6.17 kernel, and only with my DVD-ROM now, which sucks at
ripping.

I may have to troubleshoot this here, because my thread on the Ubuntu
forums has generated no responses as usual.
