On mine, Synaptic did close and thought it was finished.  Then it
looked at the existing packages, looked for updates, paused a little
and came right back up with that annoying libpath-class-perl.

It has something to do with it.  It started right after I went into
System - Administration - Software Sources and made a change or two.  I
won't be doing that again, but I thought all it did was edit
sources.list.  Which it probably does, but in a way I'm not yet
familiar with.
