Sadly, I must have deleted something important from /usr/share/slimserver/HTML/EN/html/softsqueeze while trying to reinstall Softsqueeze manually from the Sourceforge .zip. (Shouldn't have emptied the folder without checking that there were no hidden extras in the one SS installed!) The Help page in my Fishbone skin now finds nothing (and I mean I get a completely white, blank panel) when I try to open the Softsqueeze page from there. So it looks like I'll have to reinstall SS anyway. But I'll also try switching to Java 5 as you suggest.
