bhaagensen >>> Brill !  That seems to have done the trick.  I
reinstalled SoftSqueeze, and it worked fine.  

However, the original problem is not resolved:  pressing and holding
'Pause' on the SSqueeze 'remote' still causes the app to freeze.  This
seems to be a problem with SSqueeze.  Also, the 'Search' button does
not trigger LazySearch as it should (though I can start it OK from the
Plugins menu).  Curiously, LazySearch does work in the alternative
'Help' screen applet;  but that, too, freezes when I try to stop a
track with the 'Pause' button.

I think it may be better to start a thread about these issues in 3rd
Party Plugins.

This is just brilliant.  I've had a quick look at update-alternatives,
and it looks amazing.  You certainly couldn't do this in that other OS.
I can see it coming in very handy.
