Please note that the next 7.1 nightly build (rev. 21067 or later) should have a new startup parameter which allows to force a character set. It's based on flipflip's patch (thanks!). Just add --charset utf8 to the startup params, and you should be done. Please give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
