A technical "headless" system has no console at all. Not even a shell to enter commands. If you have a very, very underpowered system, you can install Linux without X-windows. But I always install X-windows and a basic GUI shell even on my headless systems. I have an eight way KVM between my servers, but most of the time, nearly always, I just SSH in from a laptop. Its cold and noisey in my basement where the servers are. In practice, a Linux server running SqueezeCenter doesn't need a GUI. And it rarely needs anything.
