You need all of X11, and its a bit complex with all the interlocking dependencies. Can you just reinstall Ubuntu and select "desktop" this time? In debian, you can manually select the Windowing system (X-11) and the desktop stuff As I wrote up thread, I always install X-11 and that stuff, even though its not technically needed for a headless server.
