Plus installing Ubuntu is cheap/free.

One obscure or semi-obscure thing that I found out the hard way:
the i386 version only supports one CPU. If you have a dual core or quad,
you need at least the 686 version.

And in theory, the 686 version has some optimizations for the increased
instruction set of more modern CPUs.
