Yes, You should install the alsa library (needed for 'development' purposes, like compiling your own programs). On fedora, the file (/usr/lib/libasound.so or /usr/lib/libasound.a) is in package 'alsa-lib-devel'. On ubuntu, it's in 'libasound2-dev'.
