It looks like something went wrong with your upgrade, but I don't know what error 24 is specifically. After booting to the old installation (the 3rd choice, "Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic") see if you get presented with the option to upgrade again. If so, accept the option, and see if it works better the second time around.
