it is purely an ubuntu upgrade issue.

you may want to carefully use synaptic package manager to erase the
unusable linux upgrade files, and that should -i heard, although i have
never made the experience- remove those entries from your grub file.

i would definitely continue to seek advice in the Ubuntu beginner
forums.

i am running 8.10 myself, with all the updates, and my grub bootup menu
looks pretty much the same - and it all works well. hope you sort it out
soon!
