Not sure why you're posting this here instead of
http://ubuntuforums.org. Wouldn't that be a more appropriate place to
direct your comments about "the marketing folks" and "the consumer
experience" of the operating system? The Ubuntu forum is very good
(though not as good as this one...), and between that and the official
help and manual pages that come with Ubuntu you shouldn't need to "comb
various forums" to find your answers. But it's not everyone's cup of
tea, which is why the Live CD is such a good idea for trying it out
without going through a full install.

Sorry it didn't work for you, but it's hard to see this as a Squeezebox
issue.
