Re #11: Absolutely. I've got SqueezeCenter running on a 400MHz Pentium III with 384MB of RAM, some ancient video card, etc, and 850GB or so of cheap storage. The same box is my web server, mail server, print server, and general file server.
As for worries about drivers, as I said before, drivers exist for what the manufacturers will support. Same as with Windows. And it's a simple fact that Linux supports more hardware than any operating system in history.
