I had also deliberated over the purpose built NAS vs home build and went for the home build solution using a mini-ITX based system. My problem now is choosing which OS to use - was going to go with Openfiler but I'm having real difficulty installing SC7 on it so will look at the Vortex/Ubuntu options.
