version.  Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is good if you're not familiar with
Linux yet. It's easy to install, there's a lot of information on the web
about using Ubuntu, and the various support forums are friendly and
welcoming. 

Many here would rightly recommend Debian 5 'Lenny', too.  Debian is the
foundation on which Ubuntu is built.  But you should be prepared to do a
bit more learning at the outset (which you might enjoy if you're that
sort of person) -- or get a bit more experience first.

I'd also agree with epoch1970 that the Debian package management system
makes installing applications impressively easy.  (I wouldn't do without
it!)
