Once your using USB for primary storage you run in to a host of
problems not the lest of witch is the requirement of having two power
supplys on all the time. I think the best option is a nettop like the
VortexBox appliance that uses 3.5" drives.

But if you just want to convert an old laptop 500GB 2.5" drives are
fairly inexpensive and large enough for most music collections.

I don't ever see the need to using USB as primary storage.
