Thanks for your replies, power usage while sleeping wasn't something I'd considered and is important. I'll have to see what it is drawing when off and sleeping.
Wake from off is about 2/3 minutes, I've read that the later releases of Ubuntu do wake quicker so will try rebuilding first and see if that helps. Hardware replacement isn't an option so if it does come down to my components slowing the process down then I'll be living with it.
