On my ubuntu 10.04 server box, I just swapped out my 2T ntfs formatted
audio hard disk to a new one with a ext2 file system. I had expected
my whole-library scans to be much faster as I was under the impression
that the ntfs-3g file system driver was a little slow. To my surprise,
I'm now finding that the SBS scans of the ext2 drive are slower!
Lately, full scans of my >55k track library on the ntfs disk were
clocking in at about 26 minutes. With the ext2 drive, I'm now seeing
scan times in the 30 minute range.
Could this be right?
Here is my mount line for the drive from fstab:
Code:
--------------------
#old ntfs drive:
#UUID=76142D53142D179F /mnt/media
ntfs-3g rw,defaults,noatime,umask=0000 0 2
#new ext2 drive:
UUID=c7243996-9d60-4075-b779-630200302d07 /mnt/media
ext2 rw,defaults,noatime 0 2
--------------------
Anything I ought to be doing to speed up reading from that drive?
2nd question: after suffering through a _very_ long fsck on that 2T
ext2 drive, I suddenly see the wisdom of ext3. Any pointers on the
kind of journal to create? I'm using mostly big files: whole-cd flacs
with embedded cues so, while the track count as far as SBS is concerned
is >55k, the actual file count on the disk is closer to 20k.
Additionally, with the m4v video files I'm hosting on this drive, the
2T drive is now 83% full.
