Have you considered ext4? It supports very, very fast filesystem checks. (wikipedia has a good overview of the improvements in ext4)
Your Ubuntu system will support ext4 and you don't need to play with journaling options - just format & go. That's the downside though - you woudl have to reformat your disk.
