it's fairly easy. you just have to get comfortable with the cli. choose a distro and go from there. there are packages which install for each eg rpm for fedora, rhel etc which basically takes care of the install and the dependancies. install webmin which will allow you to use a web based interface to configure things and use winscp/putty to transfer files & issue commands. samba is easy once you understand the config file so all in all, it's not hard. give it a shot.... it'll dust the cobwebs of your brain and you can have a bit of fun with it.
