Thanks a lot. I took the opportunity to reinstall the server on an USB stick to limit HD usage - and got the SBS up again. I had one occurrence of the problem again, but it went away afetr rebooting.
I suspect that the installation somewhere set a flag in a way that scewed the check for the instance of SBS.
