The behavior has generally been that an album's newness is determined by the most recent timestamp on any of its tracks. So if you do something that modifies the timestamp on one track, the whole album becomes "newer". You shouldn't be getting multiple entries for the same album. Some possible explanations (there are no doubt other possibilities):
1. You've found a new bug. 2. You were also changing the filename or folder name, and didn't do a clear-and-rescan afterwards. 3. On some of your tag edits you accidentally changed the album name on some tracks, but not all the tracks of the album.
