Actually renaming the folders doesn't explain old albums becoming new
music. That should only happen if the timestamp on one or more of the
_files_ is updated enough to make it considered new. If all you are
changing is the folder name, it should not affect whether the album is
considered new. 

On the other hand, you can expect to get a lot of phony duplicates of
albums if you rename the folder and then forget to do a full clear and
rescan.

That folder numbering system seems like a lot of work, but I'm sure you
have reasons for it based on your usage, which presumably involves a lot
of browsing by music folder.
