Squeezeboxes require a server of some kind. That server can be a local
one (LMS), or one "in the cloud" (mysqueezebox.com). Logitech
discontinuing squeezebox just means that they'll almost certainly shut
down mysqueezebox.com at some point, though no threat or date has been
given for such a move at this point. But LMS will continue to work just
fine; it's open-source software that you run on your local machine.
Indeed, this is how many of us operate our squeezeboxes and how I have
always run my squeezeboxes for the last 10 years; I do not use
mysqueezebox.com at all. You can read the many threads discussing the
implications of mysqueezebox.com going away but it mainly comes down to
3 things:
1) You'll have to run a local instance of LMS on your network
2) Certain internet service integrations will no longer work (Rhapsody,
MOG, a version of Spotify, etc.)
3) The current integration with TuneIn for internet radio discovery
won't work

And it's important to note that any "genuine" Squeezebox device will not
be any less functional (for Squeezebox purposes) than your raspberry pi
device. All the limitations stated above will apply equally to your
raspberry-pi-as-squeezebox device. You're just putting in a lot more
effort to get your raspberry pi to emulate a Squeezebox.

Of course, if you're talking about the flexibility of the raspberry pi
to move away from the squeezebox ecosystem entirely in the future
(running completely different audio playback and management software)
then of course that's flexibility a genuine Squeezebox device won't
have. As for me, I see no reason to do that anytime soon; LMS is
incredibly powerful and flexible.
