What's the output debug show that the output device is opened as?  If
mmap works then it tries S24_3LE before S16_LE - the debug will say what
it has opened.  -c pcm will require the server to do the decode, so
worth checking the debugs on the server.  But this is only relavent if
you are running out of cpu..
