Obviously everything on the board needs to work, whether that be the USB
port, ethernet port or SPDIF out, but this is primarily about the
on-board DAC analogue out. It will be the first chance for people to get
to hear the audio output with the DAC chip John has chosen, the on-chip
oversample / DF off, using sox to DF / upsample..... And get feedback on
that. The sole reason for the existence of the board is that the SQ has
to be several orders of magnitude better than that provided by the
sgtl5000 on the default carrier board, otherwise there isn't any reason
to replace it with a third-party DAC board. We already have a mix of
people using different setups with different systems, at various price
points. I'm confident, knowing what hardware is being used by many of
the people who spoke up yesterday, that we will get some good feedback,
and opinions regarding SQ. It's rather pointless placing an order for
200 DAC boards if the feedback is that the SQ is crap, compared to a $50
USB DAC that you can buy on eBay and plug into the default carrier
board. To be blunt, the "product" is dead in the water, before it even
got started, that being the case.

The value proposition of the DAC board, (player), is audiophile SQ at
non-audiophile pricing, not needing to spend an additional few hundred
bucks on an external DAC. John has made some claims, (which I don't
doubt for one minute), some are measurable, some are subjective. It is
important that the feedback on SQ is that it is at least as good as the
<= $500 DAC's that people are already using driven by the "stock"
Wandboard. That the analogue output will work, the SPDIF out will work,
the ethernet port will work, the USB port will work, the serial port
will work, is a given. With the SOC design, the heavy lifting is still
being done by the CPU board, the replacement carrier board is all about
audio, the DAC chip, the high quality clocks.... That's what differs
from the default carrier board.
