Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting that the _safe script has anything
to do with the original problem.  It should work fine with it, I just
don't think it's necessary anymore.  As mentioned earlier, starting with
-d_startup will probably tell you that it's failing because some perl
modules can't be loaded and they need to be built for your version of
perl.
