Alsamixer isn't actually a mixer in the traditional sense, it doesn't actually change the bits going to the DAC. It sends control codes to the DAC to tell it to change the volume. That is only going to work if the DAC has an internal volume control of some sort, the 2707 does not have a volume control so you can change the volume all you want in alsamixer and nothing is going to happen.
